For many Australian families, the move from Better Start to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) raises practical questions: What changes? What stays the same? Who do I call?

This guide walks through the key steps so you can prepare with confidence.

Who needs to transition?

Children currently receiving Better Start funding will move to the NDIS as their state or territory rolls out the scheme. The transition is staged. Your Carers Association will let you know when it’s your turn.

What to gather before your planning meeting

  • A current diagnosis report from a paediatrician or specialist
  • Your child’s current therapy reports (OT, speech, physio)
  • A list of supports you currently use and what’s working
  • Goals for the next 12 months, both functional and developmental

Your first NDIS plan

The first plan typically runs for 12 months. Don’t feel pressured to lock in every detail. Your plan can be reviewed and adjusted as your child’s needs evolve.

If your child isn’t eligible for the NDIS

Some children may not meet NDIS eligibility criteria. In that case, the Continuity of Support programme may cover ongoing care. Eligibility is assessed case-by-case. Contact your state representative for advice.
